Where the border between north and south rotates between east and west. There is an interesting move afoot where the Prairie Provinces and even the indigenous peoples are trying wrest control of their own destinies from the federal government to solve the problems that entity won’t solve and to engage directly in commerce with the globe.

And it’s even easier to see now in the ongoing energy crisis with $6 a gallon heating oil and severe shortages of food in some countries. Maybe they can bring back gas lines from the 1970s and Ration Stamps from World War 2!

Whenever people discuss the right to keep and bear arms and the Bill of Rights I am reminded of two things.

The first is James Madison’s version of what became the Second Amendment: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; a well armed and well regulated militia being the best security of a free country: but no person religiously scrupulous of bearing arms shall be compelled to render military service in person.” Note that it places the right to keep and bear arms first, gives militia service as one reason to keep and bear arms, and recognizes the right of conscientious objectors to not be called up for militia duty. Arguably this means the amendment was about protecting the right of conscientious objection, not just the right to keep and bear arms.

Secondly, one of the reasons given for passing the 14th Amendment was to overturn Black Codes passed by the post Civil War South banning newly freed slaves and other Black people from owning guns. This was actually taught in Texas into the 1980’s in US History. I wonder if this is still being taught.
