EDITORIAL MATTERS:

Well, as I was preparing Michael Bradshaw's article "SpaceShipOne, GovernmentZero" for this issue, I read the line you see in red up in our "motto" area. And I had to stop and cry a bit. I realized I'd actually become convinced I'd never ever read or hear anyone using those words. I feel better now. Lots better!

Surprise? What surprise? I'm still waiting for a certain someone to make it happen. Until then, I'm just as surprised as you!

Iraq and Global Victim Disarmament: The Ugly Truth
by Anthony Gregory
As the readers of TLE undoubtedly know, there is a raging mob of people who would like nothing better than to disarm every American who lacks a badge or government paycheck, as one of the final nails in the coffin of what was once called "American liberty." Some of the members of this mob are bureaucrats, politicians and police officers. Some of them are common, if dangerously misguided, folks who do not have anything to gain from such a fascist policy, other than a false sense of security.

Bill of Rights Nullification by the US Supreme court
by Kristopher Barrett
They have nullified the first; you have to be a politician to criticise a politician on TV or radio before an election.

"Quote, Unquote"
by Manuel Miles, aka Kapt Kanada
It may well be that I have finally said all that I have to say. I hesitate to publish this conclusion lest my legions of critics keep their neighbours awake all night from the sound of their partying. Recently, however, I find that I am repeating myself (or did I mention that already?) and fear that I may become like the Firesign Theatre's fabled ode to government, the Department of Redundancy Dept. So, this week, at least, I shall inspire my loyal readership with the words of other, more articulate observers of the human race.

Somebody Please Wake Me Up
by Francis A Ney, Jr
I'm having a really bad trip.
Seriously.
The events of the past few weeks lead me to believe that I'm having a bad acid flashback the likes of which Timothy Leary never experienced. The only trouble is, the drug the government is pushing down my throat is, well, government. It's been well established that Cheyney, Ashcroft, and Ridge, Tyrants At Law, want to keep USA PATRIOT in force beyond the sunset date. But that doesn't seem to be good enough for them anymore.

A Survey of History, Part 1
by Ron Beatty
Many people claim that Iraq is an undeclared war, and that therefore it is an illegitimate one. They are correct. There are other people who claim that the American people will not stand for an indefinite state of war. Bullsh*t!!!!

What Are You Saying?
by Lady Liberty
Whether you're forming a group or starting a business, one of the first and most important things you consider (after deciding where your focus will lie, of course) is the name of that group or business. Short, sweet, and to the point is usually best. If you get too cute, people may not take you seriously. If you get too clever, people may not recognize who you are or what you do.

Why Can't We All Win?
by Lex Concord
An Election Year is upon us, and the stakes are higher than ever. Thanks to decades of unrelenting growth in government, the winning President and the winning Party will get to determine many issues, large and small. What countries will be bombed and invaded, and for what reasons? What fundamental human rights will be denied, for the "common good"? Who can marry whom? What plants can individuals grow and consume, which ones will receive government subsidies, and which ones will subject you to the loss of your car, your home, and your free time for the next ten years or so? What will your children be taught in their formative years, religious morality or secular humanism? How much of your property and your income belongs to you, and how much will be taken from you to serve the whims of the Elected?

Tag-Teaming the Hunter
by Carl Bussjaeger
I don't usually go in for sports analogies, but it is so very apt in the case of Jeffrey "Hunter" Jordan versus Verizon Communications and the state of Ohio. Tag team wrestling.

The Decline of Affirmative Action
by Wendy McElroy
A year ago, on June 23rd, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of affirmative action (AA) in two cases that challenged the University of Michigan's (U-M) admissions policies. Yet Ted Shaw, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Legal Defense Fund, has stated, "in the year since Michigan... some institutions have retreated from affirmative action even though we won the case." Why is AA on the decline?
