Golly! Time shore does fly when you're having fun. I really need
to read-up on the meaning of "fun" I guess. Here's issue 279 of
TLE, our Special Independence Day Issue. No, I don't understand
it either. Please set your browser's default font to "Baskerville"
for a pleasant reading experience. Or not. Up to you.

In the first two articles of this series, we discussed the history
of undeclared wars in US history and also discussed whether we
actually do live in a free country. Now, I realize that to many
libertarians, these are relatively well-known and well-worn paths to
take. However, we need to share these facts with the
non-libertarians out there, too, which is why I am writing these
articles.

I recently returned to Australia for six months after having spent
two years living in various countries in Europe. In the story I am
about to tell, I certainly stuck my neck out, but the whole
experience left me wondering just what's happened to this place since
I left.

This past week, I traveled back home for a family event. As most of
you know, I decline to fly (and will continue to do so as long as
needlessly invasive security measures remain in place). That means I
spent two very long days behind the wheel of a rental car with
little to do but endure traffic jams on my way through several large
cities and listen to the radio.

To the untrained eye, it would appear Michael Moore's latest
documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11, is the cinematic equivalent of
an ad for John Kerry. Indeed, as the film unfolds, Moore makes
connections between the Bush and Bin Laden families, Big Oil, the
Saudis, etc., explaining who stood to profit from wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, while stopping just short of calling it a conspiracy.
And it would seem, then, that the only thing missing here is a shot
of the Massachusetts senator saying, "I'm John Kerry, and I approved
this message," as the credits roll.

To my previous column on Courage, add Mr Frank Serpico. He's truly
an American hero. Just type his name into Google and see what he's
(still!) up to these days.

Alicia Davis may be America's first state-funded defense attorney
for parents accused of abuse by the same state's own child
protective services. She assumes office this week as Utah's director
of the Office of Child Welfare Parental Defense.
