When you let governments do whatever they want, you get Auschwitz."

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

Love of truth necessary. He that would seriously set upon the search of truth ought in the first place to prepare his mind with a love of it. For he that loves it not will not take much pains to get it; nor be much concerned when he misses it. There is nobody in the commonwealth of learning who does not profess himself a lover of truth: and there is not a rational creature that would not take it amiss to be thought otherwise of. And yet, for all this, one may truly say, that there are very few lovers of truth, for truth's sake, even amongst those who persuade themselves that they are so. How a man may know whether he be so in earnest, is worth inquiry: and I think there is one unerring mark of it, viz. The not entertaining any proposition with greater assurance than the proofs it is built upon will warrant. Whoever goes beyond this measure of assent, it is plain, receives not the truth in the love of it; loves not truth for truth's sake, but for some other bye-end.
—John Locke,Essay concerning Human Understanding, Book IV, Chapter 19 ("Of Enthusiasm")

The Boys Who Cried "Terrorist"
by L. Neil Smith
As just about everybody on the planet, and most everywhere else in the Solar System, knows by now, the benevolant and doughty secret police of Airstrip One—oh, please excuse me, they're still calling it Great Britain, aren't they? How quaint—claims to have foiled a heinous plot to blow up commercial airliners with the use of explosive toothpaste.

We Have Met the Enemy in the War On Terror. . . and He Is Us
by Doug Newman
Is it just me, or does anyone else feel the vise grip tightening? Thursday's news read as follows: "Airline passengers around the country stood in line for hours and airport trash bins bulged with everything from mouthwash and shaving cream to maple syrup and fine wine Thursday in a security crackdown prompted by the discovery of a terror plot in Britain."

Control-Freak News
For the week of 006-08-07

by E.J. Totty
It's been a busy week for the Control Freaks, and if history is any indicator, it will get very much worse before it gets better! My own comments—if any, are in italics preceding each of the stories.

Self-Esteem and Hubris
by Chris Claypoole
Last week I wrote about individualism, inspired by the commentary of The Road to Serfdom by F.A. Hayek, as opposed to the centralized planning culture of statists. Those of us who are libertarians are necessarily individualists, simply because we do not believe that having some people force others to do things against their will is a good idea, much less a moral one.

Calling Mr. Obvious
by Lady Liberty
Every weekday morning, I listen to my favorite morning radio program. The Bob and Tom Show amuses me, and at that time of day I need all the amusement I can get. Although I appreciate the news, interviews, and other regular facets of the show, one of my favorite bits involves a recurring character named Mr. Obvious.

The Mad Lib of Bigotry
by Alex McConnell
This will certainly be offensive to some, so keep the fainthearted away! Also, it's worth noting that not all of these things are unjustified. Some people have valid reasons to be disgusted or offended by some of these things. The point here is that it's wrong to force your views unto others or to deny others equal rights based on your views, justified or not.

Dancer's Suit Puts Corrupt Lawyers on Their Toes
by Wendy McElroy
What would you do if a lawyer threatened, "Give me a million dollars or my client and I will publicly brand you as a rapist and destroy your life?" On July 27, the California Supreme Court expanded the range of choices possible to one man who was presented with that threat. The dance phenomenon Michael Flatley of Riverdance fame can proceed not only with a lawsuit for defamation against his accuser but also with one for extortion against her lawyer.
