EDITORIAL MATTERS:

Greetings, and welcome to the Three-hundred ninety-seventh edition of TLE! 10-years old and going strong. Perhaps things aren't as awful as they sometime seem, eh?

This issue is delayed slightly, but such is life.

I don't know about you, but I'm tired. I suppose it's the stress and strain of our taking care of my wife's mom, who's 84-years-old and not as spry as she used to be. In fact, she's not spry at all these days, requiring us to help her into the wheelchair just to get around. But she is the world's greatest mom and grandma—it says so right on her license-plate frame on her car (which she can't drive anymore). We cooked her a nice dinner this evening and packed it up and took it over to her house (right behind ours). And a good time was had by all. And then it was back to the grindstone to get this edition of TLE out.

Speaking of TLE, this is a Reader-Supported eMagazine. You (yes you!) are a reader, so why not toss some support our way. Here's a page that lists all of the ways:

Well, almost all of the ways, since you can click on our affiliate and advertiser links and provide some support that way as well (you may or may not have to actually buy something, depending on the link!). And however you support us, we thank you, and we're glad you're reading. So dig-in and enjoy. We couldn't do it without you!

Back to Basics: Part Three
by L. Neil Smith
In our last thrilling episode, I asserted that, for libertarians, getting from "here" to "there"—from the police state that has been erected around us by the Republican and Democrat wings of the Boot On Your Neck party, to a culture where the only law is an obligation to respect the freedom of others—can be accomplished in five simple steps:

Is America a place. . . or a vision?
by Steve Trinward
It's not often I find something worth commenting on at World Net Daily. Since about the time of the September 11 attacks, and the subsequent "patrioter than thou" pro-neocon shift of Joseph Farah and his minions, that alleged news-site has gone off my daily rounds, probably for good. But every so often I find an article referenced elsewhere, one that stretches my disbelief even farther than usual. This was one of those days.

Violence Flares in Oregon
by Andrew G. Eggleston Sr.
Oregon, Nov 29 2006—The transportation industry fell under attack this past week as violence flared between police and truck drivers. And what would precipitate an initiation of force between the police departments and those folks in the transportation industry? Why an accident of course! Any of my readers who has ever driven anything with more than three axles (this includes a pick-up truck with a trailer) knows that there is a point where that beast of a vehicle beneath you can up and do what it wants all on its own. Oops, forgot to add that it was freezing, with packed snow and ice on the roads. Did I mention that this accident took place on a highway hill with a steep grade of 6%? (This means that the road drops more than 300 feet each mile)

In Defense of Desk Rage

My local news station recently did a piece on something called "desk rage," which is apparently supposed to be like road rage, only at work instead of on the roads.

Never Give Up Your Rights!
by Doug Newman
In a recent column on World Net Daily, Robert Ringer states that "In order to preserve freedom, some freedoms must be restricted." Although I have heard similar things God knows how many times since 9/11, this particular column got my dander up. I guess it is because it so neatly summarizes the panic mentality that has come over so many Americans in the last five years.

The Real Deal
by Vern Trumbly
The title of this article is the my campaign slogan as, you see, I've decided to run for Prez in '08. What the heck, couldn't do any worse than the (Rword) currently defaming (or is that defecating on ) that office and filling the shoes of lesser beings who've gone before. Okay, before this turns into a rant, let me tell you why I have decided to run for Prez. A few days ago I was having an interesting and far ranging conversation with a friend who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty since it was his/her idea in the first place. We were talking about how the Department of Health and Human Services has developed a new recommendation of abstinence in lieu of real sex education and/or contraceptive use to avoid STD's and unwanted pregnancy; for every unmarried person under the age of thirty. Just one more nail in the coffin of our gooferment, placed there by religious right wing fanatics. As an aside, I often wonder how those people actually manage to breed. There seems no end of them, so they must, but being so anal about sex and such, it just stands to reason they don't know what goes in whose ear. So anyway, back to the conversation we were having: I told the old joke about (Rwords) wanting to take all the fun out of things and (Dwords) just wanting to tax it. We rambled on from there for a bit and the rest of the conversation went something like this:

How Do You Feel?
by Lady Liberty
This weekend, a friendly argument offered a revelation of sorts. It also explained a whole lot about why people vote as they do, and why politicians lead as they do.
