THE CURRENT ISSUE

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

Exciting week! We ran out of propane on account of the propane company didn't deliver on account of we hadn't paid all of our bill, on account of we didn't have enough money. And then when we called 'em, they said they'd bring some out in a couple of days (50-gallons, about 2-weeks worth, maybe—we've turned the thermostat down to 56 to make it last!). So we had two days with no heat except for a couple of small electric heaters, during which time the outside temp at night got into the teens, Fahrenheit. Exciting times! Nothing like exciting times to make yer appreciate dull times, oh yeah!

But other than that here we are, starting a new year with the hope that things will be better. A feller's gotta have hope, or else yer just up and die, don't you know. Hope is good. I have hope, optimism, enthusiasm, and good thoughts. Yes I do. I do, indeed I do. I hope you do too.

Oh yes, I see it's time to mention that ol' donation nag. But only donate for the support of TLE if and only if you find TLE worth reading every week, and if and only if you can afford to spare a bit of your hard-earned cash money. Here's how:

Here We Go Again
by L. Neil Smith
At my age, I've found that time flies whether you're having fun or not. The intervals between Christmases grow shorter (they seemed like eons when I was a kid), those between birthdays blur past altogether, and even those in between Presidential elections seem startlingly briefer.

Tyranny Is Sin
by A.X. Perez
The Judeo-Christian religions (this includes Islam) subscribe to the Ten Commandments. It is kind of fun to note that every form of tyranny eventually violates all of them. Thought I'd run through the list. I may mix up the Catholic and Jewish/Protestant translations to speed up this article. Anyone who wishes to is free to expand on the pecation of those who would suppress liberty:

War is a Racket
by General Smedley Butler, USMC
A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

Ron Paul... Our Last, Best Hope To Restore Freedom
by Linda Cirincione
The following is an open letter to a friend who has published articles as to why people should not vote for Ron Paul—because he has not taken a strong position on certain specific issues (ie. impeachment), as well as this person's fear that leaving laws up to the states will not alleviate the wrongs that the government's violation of individual rights is doing (ie. like imprisoning many people for "victimless crimes").

The Kaptain's Yule Log
by Manuel Miles, aka Kaptain Kanada
It's the most wonderful time of the year, when even nasty old curmudgeons like your Kaptain have to admit that it's a wonderful life, despite everything. I have no gift he said, parum parum pum... but this much I can do: go to the following YouTube videos and you will have a very Merry Christmas indeed.

Western Raiding Parties offer to "Help" by Raiding Government
by Robert Jackman
I started a conversation one day on Reddit concerning a story about a form of "Government" that was not "The Government" based on an article about the mystery known as Somalia.

Cathy's Vote in 2008
by Cathy L.Z. Smith
Who is Ron Paul... well, you've likely heard all the facts about him... long-time (10 terms, I think) Republican Representative from Texas, a doctor, his constituents are fiercely loyal... his own party once tried to gerrymander his district away from him, but he managed to stay in office anyway.

The Last Sonuvabitch of Klepton, Part 7
by Scott Bieser
The Planet Klepton—a strange world dominated by thieves and scammers and ruled by an elite class know as The Sonzabitches. . .
