THE CURRENT ISSUE

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

This is the "Throw it Together and Go Lie Down" issue. Thanks to all the well-wishers for Dangerous Pat's open-heart surgery. It went very well, and she's making a faster-than-normal recovery. Today she took a shower all by herself. Alas, I myself picked up strep throat while sleeping on a cot in her hospital room—got chilled one night due to not enough blankets or something. Throat feels like I tried to swallow a razor blade and it got stuck. Got some antibiotics from the doc. Am actually feeling better, but not much.

So, this issue I put together quickly, and by the time I'm well next week, all will be back to normal. The issue could have been twice as big, but I'm feeling like passing out already, and couldn't manage the extra work.

Mass Hysteria in Eldorado Texas
by L. Lawrence Baird
with L. Neil Smith
Everybody saw it on TV and the Internet: "heroic" federal law enforcement officers "rescuing" hundreds of young women from the "compound" of a "polygamist sect" in Texas, the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints Church, to the unanimous applause of the media hairspray set, and with no one to speak for those the government had singled out.

Are Bob Barr or Mike Gravel at all libertarian?
by Jim Davidson
So, I attended the Heartland Libertarian conference in Kansas City this past weekend. It was sort of interesting. The setting was the Intrigue Park Place hotel. Right in the middle of an industrial park, and apparently a paper mill or something was responsible for the fumes. What a headache.

We Must Bring Back Free Immigration and Free Trade
by Todd Andrew Barnett
The collectivistic Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and collectivistic Sen. John McCain (the Republican candidate from Arizona who's already coronated by the mainstream "government" media and even the GOP delegates) must be enjoying themselves with the immigration and trade issues, which have been a matter of public discussion for the bulk of the Election 2008 season. Immigration certainly has already faded from the political scene. Trade, on the other hand, is one that hasn't, considering that the Democrats, with the heavy hand of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, want to "table" the "free trade" deal with Columbia. (The reason it is not truly free trade, because President George W. Bush and his collectivistic stalwarts on both sides of the aisle are primarily interested in touting government-managed subsidized trade, given the Columbian trade agreement and other past trade agreements like CAFTA and NAFTA are ladened with so many arbitrary rules and regulations that are aimed at protecting certain industries while harming others in the process.)

Now!... as in Not Later
by Ernest Hancock
The Presidential Election of November 2008 will have Americans casting votes weeks before "election day", and most minds will be made up well before that. Any meaningful impact the Libertarian Party of the United States and/or its nominee will have on the issues discussed, and the accompanying libertarian solutions in this presidential election cycle, is diminishing with every passing moment and we must be able to react very quickly to every opportunity presented us and create many of our own. I can help.
