THE LIBERTARIAN ENTERPRISE Number 465, April 27, 2008 "This Ain't the Summer of Love" Attribute to The Libertarian Enterprise On the 22nd of April 2008 ABC news broadcast a story regarding the purchase of firearms in the US by Mexican drug dealers. It was implied that Something Needed To Be Done About It, that something being stricter gun control laws applied to gun dealers along the Mexican border. It is true that currently Mexican cops along the Border are pretty much involved in a shooting war with the narcotrafficantes, one that approaches the intensity of fighting in Iraq. However, we are talking about the same cops who are part of the reason something like ten percent of Mexico's population is residing in the US, legally and otherwise. We are talking about the same cops who allowed three hundred female factory workers, school girls, and hookers be robbed, raped, and murdered, then tried to lay the crimes off on unidentified cults and victims of torture to extract confessions. These are the same cops that accepted and extorted bribes from everyone and anyone, including the drug dealers they are now fighting. These are the same cops that used to bust tourist couples if the girl was clingy and require either a bribe or that the girl buy a prostitute's license ( this last is a widely accepted urban legend in El Paso, Texas area. Will be glad to hear or read reliable reports confirming or denying.) Perhaps if we fixed the problems in the US that lead to drug abuse, most of which are caused by lack of economic opportunity, we can save the lives of the more honest cops in Mexico. But if you think restricting the gun rights of people in the US is the way to accomplish this you are probably one of the drug abusers creating the problem.
