THE CURRENT ISSUE

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

This issue slightly delayed. I blame it on Globular Warming. Of which we're having a nice bit of the last few days. In fact, the night-time temps aren't even going below freezing. Aw-reet!

Legacy of Ashes: A Review
by Jim Davidson
Tim Weiner wrote a book in 2007 about the Central Intelligence Agency. He took for his title a comment by Dwight D. Eisenhower. On leaving the White House in 1961, Eisenhower said that he feared, because of the foreign policy mess created largely by an out of control CIA and military industrial complex, he was leaving to his successor a "legacy of ashes."

What Would Freedom Look Like?
by Paul Bonneau
When looking at what direction to go, it's often a good idea to imagine what it would look like if one actually got there. I'm talking about freedom, of course. For one thing, such a plausible scenario might be used to dispense fears of people for whom it is not obvious that the end result is one they can live with.

Roswell, Texas (by L. Neil, Rex F. May, Scott Bieser, and Jen Zach)
Reviewed by John Walker
I have previously mentioned this story and even posted a puzzle based upon it. This was based upon the online edition, which remains available for free. For me, reading anything, including a comic book (sorry— "graphic novel"), online a few pages a week doesn't count as reading worthy of inclusion in this list, so I deferred listing it until I had time to enjoy the trade paperback edition, which has been sitting on my shelf for several months after its June 2008 release.

This Hurricane Season part 2
by Sean Gangol
Over a year ago I wrote an article entitled "This Hurricane Season" which criticized the local, state and federal governments for the way they handled Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. During Hurricane Ike I got to experience the incompetence of government officials first hand. I also experienced the ineptness of our local power company and the stupidity of our local media. When I received word that the hurricane was going to hit Houston, I dreaded the day it would happen. It wasn't the hurricane itself that worried me. It was the aftermath that I dreaded.

Reality Check
by A.X. Perez
Barack Obama is neither the New Messiah nor the AntiChrist. I'm sure most libertarians understand this but be aware that liberals and conservatives have imposed these Apocalyptic expectations on him. This tempts him and his successors to overplay their hand and behave tyrannically, convincing themselves that their misuse of power is for "the greater good." On the other hand conservatives will be tempted to go too far in overturning his actions when they inevitably return to power. They will forget that counter-tyranny is still tyranny (those who even consider the political debate in terms of tyranny versus liberty).

Taxes, Statism, Authority and Anal rape. Or Three Weddings and a Funeral?
by David Earnest
Fellow Prisoners! To me Taxes is the rewarding kick in the balls you get from government for earning a living. How dare I be independent of governmental benevolence! What odoriferous selfishness!

Atlantea The Beautiful: An Explanation (or a Poor Excuse)
by L. Neil Smith
and Rex F. May
We (not in the royal, nor even in the editorial sense, but simply because I'm writing this with my partner Rex F. May) have become aware—painfully so—that more than a few of our loyal readers have been wondering, "What's this Atlantea the Beautiful thingie?" and "What the borscht is it supposed to be about?" and even, "Why do they bother?"
