Tim Weiner wrote a book in 2007 about the Central Intelligence
Agency. He took for his title a comment by Dwight D. Eisenhower. On leaving the
White House in 1961, Eisenhower said that he feared, because of the foreign policy
mess created largely by an out of control CIA and military industrial complex, he
was leaving to his successor a "legacy of ashes."

I have previously mentioned this story and even posted a
puzzle based upon it. This was based upon the online edition, which remains
available for free. For me, reading anything, including a comic book (sorry—
"graphic novel"), online a few pages a week doesn't count as reading worthy of
inclusion in this list, so I deferred listing it until I had time to enjoy the
trade paperback edition, which has been sitting on my shelf for several months
after its June 2008 release.

This Hurricane Season part 2

Over a year ago I wrote an article entitled
"This Hurricane Season" which criticized the local, state and
federal governments for the way they handled Hurricanes Katrina
and Rita. During Hurricane Ike I got to experience the
incompetence of government officials first hand. I also
experienced the ineptness of our local power company and the
stupidity of our local media. When I received word that the
hurricane was going to hit Houston, I dreaded the day it would
happen. It wasn't the hurricane itself that worried me. It was
the aftermath that I dreaded.

Barack Obama is neither the New Messiah nor the AntiChrist.
I'm sure most libertarians understand this but be aware that liberals and
conservatives have imposed these Apocalyptic expectations on him. This tempts
him and his successors to overplay their hand and behave tyrannically, convincing
themselves that their misuse of power is for "the greater good." On the other
hand conservatives will be tempted to go too far in overturning his actions
when they inevitably return to power. They will forget that counter-tyranny
is still tyranny (those who even consider the political debate in terms of
tyranny versus liberty).
