The Terror of Constantinople
a novel by Richard Blake
Reviewed by L. Neil Smith
In this second of what will eventually be three novels narrated
by Aelric, a young British "barbarian" and witness to a rapidly decaying classical
world, Richard Blake takes us from the dilapidated Rome of his first book,
Conspiracies of Rome, to the second seat of Roman power, originally known
as Byzantium, renamed Constantinople when attempts were made to transform it into
the center of all Christendom. Of course it was destined, eventually, to become
the Moslem city, Istanbul.

Inflation Gets Frothy
by Jim Davidson
Today I went to get gasoline. Now, I drive one of those
little foreign cars which gets good gas mileage, and I've been way to poor
to try to visit any prospective investors or freedom network events. So it
turns out that the last time I got gasoline, at the same store, was one month
ago. The price then was $1.899 and the price today was $2.299.

A Pain in the Colin
by L. Neil Smith
[Author's note: The more things change, the more they stay
the same. This essay was originally published almost fourteen years ago, in the
very first issue of The Libertarian Enterprise. I apologize for some of the
more esoteric references here and refer you to Wikipedia where necessary.] The
cover's finally off the dish, my friends, and it ain't gonna be no "Happy Meal".

Beware of Luo Bearing Gifts
by A.X. Perez
Barack Obama is beginning to worry me on the issue of gun
control. First he repudiates his Attorney General and Secretary of State on
using the trouble in Mexico as a pretext for reimposing the "Ugly Gun Ban."
Then he goes along with an amendment to The Credit Card Reform Act (or whatever
it's properly called) to allow persons licensed under local and state laws to
carry concealed handguns in national parks. Want to bet that any treaties he
negotiates to control the "illicit gun trade" will be carefully written to
protect the interests of firearms enthusiasts in the US, to include handloaders
and Hillary be damned?

What is the Ruling Class?
by Sean Gabb
Libertarians often define a ruling class as that group of
politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers, businessmen, therapists, educators and media
people who derive income and position from the State. By definition, so far as
such people operate as members of a ruling class, they are parasitic on the
efforts of ordinary people. Their position comes from forcing others to act as
they would not freely choose, or by excluding them from activities they might
freely choose. Their income is based on forced transfers of wealth.

The Good Fight
by Jim Duensing
Our first Kenyan born "President" was in Sin City on Tuesday
trying to drum up support for a Democratic candidate who stood smiling right
behind George W. Bush as he signed the Patriot Act into law and who voted for
the Bush / Cheney War in Iraq.

Welcome to 2015
A short story
by Anonymous
As soon as he answered the door he knew his luck had run out.
The Man in the business suit and his five uniformed companions could only be
revenuers. Indeed, the suit handed Gerald Kahr an official looking piece of
paper with the words, "Order to Seize Property" printed at the top.

The Source of the Human Problem and Why the Constitution Has Failed
by Rocky Frisco
After recently reading "Political Ponerology" by Andrew
Lobaczewsky, I have come up with a theory of why the Constitution has failed
us and where most of our modern human problems come from. After reading
Lobaczewsky's book, I went out online and spent hundreds of hours reading
up on psychopaths, their tendencies and behavior patterns and the effects
they have on the rest of the population. Every human population includes
around 5% male psychopaths and around 1% female psychopaths. Although they
represent a very small portion of the living humans, they have a radically
disproportionate effect on us all. Here is my theory why this is true:

The Torture Debate: Government's Sleight-Of-Hand
by Russell D. Longcore
The torture debate may be a classic example of the old
magician's "sleight of hand" routine. Watch what I'm doing over here in my
right hand, while the actual trick is happening in my left.

Still Reacting
by A.X. Perez
We are still reacting to 9/11. Apologists for the last
reign, er, administration, justify W's behavior as a reaction to 9/11. The
current bosses are basing their much of their foreign policy on fence mending
international relations damaged by the Bush administration's reaction to 9/11.
Please note that the only real policy in the war on terror change has been the
renunciation of torture as part of US intel gathering doctrine.
