ISSUE 544

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

This issue is a bit late. My 89-year-old mom died and I drove the 850-miles from here to there. And then back again. That's 1,700-miles, which is a long way. In addition I drove about another 250-miles there and back again to visit with my son and his family, since we were almost there. That's about another 500-miles. 2,200- miles?

I am tired. I don't feel so good. And I mis my mom. Ah well, life goes on.

Some Thoughts About Fort Hood
by L. Neil Smith
Almost from the instant the American people learned that a United States Army Major—and psychiatrist—one Nidal Malik Hasan, had murdered a dozen unarmed individuals at Fort Hood, Texas, and wounded around two and a half dozen more before being taken out of action by a courageous young police officer, my Inbox began filling with bigoted garbage.

More on "Net Neutrality"
by Curt Howland
What is "neutrality"? It's leaving things alone. If there was ever something the egomaniacs in any government cannot do, it's leave anything alone. So right there, at the start, any "legislation" being called "net neutrality" is itself an oxymoron.

The Care and Feeding of Animals in Prison
(not including inmates and staff)

by prison 'vet' Don Meinshausen
Many people here in prison comment that it's like Ground Hog Day. Here we are conscious of being shadowed and also that every day is the same. Maybe that is why we have ground hogs here and feed them. Why do inmates feed the ground hogs? While in prison you always want to be friendly with the guy who is making the tunnel. You dig? Some people are always indulging in escapist fantasies and it usually involves petting something cute and fuzzy. This underground culture brings out the beast here. We are living on burrowed time.

Cowardice in State Government
by Russell D. Longcore
The United States was organized with a Federal structure. Under that structure the national government was supposed to have two overriding dicta: to safeguard the States from foreign invasion and domestic violence, and provide a Republican form of government to the States. (Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution).

Loyalty -- Virtue or Vice?
by Paul Bonneau
One wonders why loyalty is so strong a characteristic among humans. Generally, the reason we have characteristics is connected to survival, and it is not so hard to imagine the survival value of loyalty. For the millions of years that humans were in tribal society, loyalty to a tribe and a tribal leader was needed to fight the "grass is greener on the other side of the hill" syndrone. The point is, all humans are far from perfect, and loyalty allows us to overlook those imperfections so we can stay within the group that supports us. Leaving a tribe in those days -- or getting thrown out of it -- was probably a way to a quick death. A quick death means your disloyalty genes don't get passed on (assuming there is a genetic connection), or at least your disloyalty meme also perishes.

Classical Liberalism: Fail
by Jim Davidson
It is excellent, we must all allow; yet this government never of itself furthered any enterprise, but by the alacrity with which it got out of its way. It does not keep the country free. It does not settle the West. It does not educate. The character inherent in the American people has done all that has been accomplished; and it would have done somewhat more, if the government had not sometimes got in its way." -- On Civil Disobedience, Henry David Thoreau

A Prophecy
by Rocky Frisco
That song the kids are singing has convinced me what the "Powers-That-be" are planning. Just another case where the goal is polarization between worship of Obama and hatred caused by that worship. The writer of that song even included the verse: "Red and yellow black and white; they are equal in his sight" a parody of a song about Jesus.

Fort Hood Murders: What Won't Be Discussed
by Russell D. Longcore
On Thursday, November 5th, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan used handguns to fire upon fellow soldiers at Fort Hood Texas, killing 13 and wounding 30. The base commander says soldiers who witnessed the shooting reported that Major Hasan shouted "Allah Akbar!" (God is great) before opening fire. Hasan, an American citizen and a practicing Muslim, himself was shot four times, and is presently hospitalized in stable condition. Originally it was thought that Hasan was killed, but later his survival was confirmed.
