THE CURRENT ISSUE

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

A MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER

The Crystal Empire, my first "epic" novel, originally published in 1986, has just been re-released in beautiful trade paperback format, with a really snazzy cover, by Phoenix Pick. The alternative history, including Muslim control of Europe, is more timely than ever, as is the never-ending struggle of individuals against power. Get it at Amazon.com There's a Kindle edition available now, and other electronic versions coming.

I'm also very happy to announce that there are audio editions of my books in the works right now. These will be full-length, unabridged readings performed by brilliant libertarian talk show host Brian Wilson. We are still discussing formats and prices. The first audio book will be The Nagasaki Vector. I can hardly wait to hear Brian with a west Texas accent.

And now...

AN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION
OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

No law shall be made, nor any ordinance, promulgation, statute, decree, or regulation, with respect to the provision and reception, by private individuals, of medicine, medical consultation, or medical care.

Any public official, elected or appointed, who violates or evades any prohibition within the Constitution shall be removed from office, stripped of pay and benefits, and imprisoned for life at hard labor, without hope of clemency or parole.

Pass it on!

A PROCLAMATION

Be it known to all:

By my authority as a reasonably honest history teacher I do decree and proclaim:

As per statements made by his own Vice President Mr. Joseph Biden:

The program pursued by Mr. Barack Hussein Obama as President of the United States of America shall now and forever more be known as the Big Fucking Deal. To avoid problems in Polite Company (harder and harder to find every day) it may also be called the Big Flipping Deal or even the Big Fracking Deal. Those who are wimps in their use of vulgarity (in the US) may also refer to it as the Big Frigging Deal.

May the sarcastic meaning of this apply to the ultimate outcome of all his acts and the acts of others in his name harmful to liberty and the "straight" meaning to those helpful.

Tastes Like Chicken
by L. Neil Smith
I didn't hear it myself, but I've been told that radio talk show host Glenn Beck was whimpering the other day about the way firearms have been brought into discussion of the way that Barack Obama and his goblin hordes have attempted to impose socialism on the people of this country.

Word Idolatry
by Jim Davidson
Walter Block says we cannot give up any words. So, in this essay He asserts that we have to keep all the words. He writes, "Every word we use to describe ourselves is precious. We must keep them all, jettison none of them." But this sort of fixation on words is a sort of idolatry. As if getting just the right words were going to fix everything. They won't. The good news is, we don't have to treat words as though they were a scarce world resource. They aren't. New words are invented every day.

Health Care Legislation: The Future of Health Care in America
by Russell D. Longcore
You didn't really think that I could resist weighing in on this health care debacle, did you? With my 35-plus year background in the insurance business, I think I can bring some unique perspective to the table. I don't know for sure what is in the bill. But from what I read all over the Internet, there are a few features that need early discussion.

A New Hope
by Sean Gangol
I remember there was a point in my life where I had an optimistic outlook on things. This was before my life experiences turned me into a total cynic. About three years ago I wrote about this in the article "Is There Hope?" I still consider myself a cynic, but thanks to some recent events, my optimism is slowly returning.

The Joy of Stealing
by Rob Sandwell
Recently, someone I know had a windfall in their life. They had been spending a vast amount of money on medicines necessary for the treatment of a debilitating, though not generally life threatening, disorder. It was a crippling burden for them, on the order of close to a thousand dollars a month in medication, and there were many times that they were forced to make a decision between paying for their medications and paying their bills.
