THE CURRENT ISSUE

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

I seem to be almost recovered from the horrible awful gawd-awful cold I had. Although I went out into the wind a few days ago and came back feeling poorly. Some hot tea and such helped. Y'all stay well out there, ya heer?

Whitey O'Thraight, the Ship's Armorer on the first interstellar vessel launched by his home planet Vespucci, finds himself stranded on a strange planet with just one other survivor. Their new benefactors and friends have something special in mind for the two survivors, but going along with these plans might mean the destruction of Vespucci as they knew it.

The Brown-Eyed Boogie Blues
A New Novel by L. Neil Smith
She swept into the office, a vision of shimmering loveliness, glossy, golden-haired, bright-eyed, with a little clutch-purse and tiny hat and veil that did nothing to conceal her features. Letting the door swing shut behind her, she crossed the room and planted herself delicately on a brown leather backless chair in front of the desk.

The Cure for Everything—Banjo Music
by Neale Osborn
No politics, no guns, nothing but bluegrass tonight! Last night, I caught a few seconds of a commercial for Letterman. Steve Martin was holding a banjo on the commercial, so I set the DVR and toodled off to bed. I'm not a fan of Letterman, so I only wanted to watch Steve, especially if he was picking. Waaay back in the late 70s, Steve Martin observed that it was impossible to stay depressed or mad when listening to a banjo pickin'. He even felt that Nixon could have kept his job if he'd a just played the banjo at his last few press conferences. (Glad Tricky Dick didn't do it!) Hell, I'd even support.... Never mind. I DID say no politics here, tonight.

GOD-Dess Capital-ISM
How poor women smuggled markets & freedom into Vietnam
and surrounded Communism through a Goddess pilgrimage

by Donald Meinshausen
You can tell a lot about a country and its culture by its ceremonies and celebrations. In some countries there is nothing but "patriotic" parades, rallies and displays of martial power. Ordered ranks of soldiers, athletes and other military hardware march before the visages of Great Leaders, past and present. Emotions are martialed to maintain the might of the state. Everyone is either part of a passive audience or a puppet on parade. But there are exceptions as celebrations and ceremonies are older than states. And these exceptions can change everything, even in Vietnam.

The Tea Parties
by Sean Gangol
Ever since the Tea Party protests began to show up in the spring of 2009, the organization has found itself under attack by the left and its allies in the mainstream media. The members have been accused of being everything from corporate cronies to white supremacists. At first most of the mud slinging came from third rate commentators like Janeane Garofalo, who took great joy in accusing the party members of being racist. Rachel Harris, who played a mean-spirited girlfriend in the movie, Hangover, also accused the Tea Partiers of being racist on an episode of Larry King Live. She shared the forum with Penn Gillette and Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy. MacFarlane also mocked the Tea Party members by calling them stupid for working against their own best interests. Penn, a comedian/magician, was the token libertarian who actually defended the Tea Parties, despite some of the ideological disagreements that he has had with the groups.

Understanding the Pattern
by Jim Davidson
When you look at the system which oppresses you, you may have some difficulty understanding it. For example, why all the attacks on peaceful people buying and selling recreational drugs? Does this make sense? It might not, at first. But you should look at the history of the drug war.
