PUBLISHER'S NOTE:
A longtime and unlikely friend of my daughter's is in hospice as
this is being written, and, presumably, not expected to live. For the
most understandable of reasons, the women in my life are inconsolable,
and my solitary hope of not joining them in utter despair is writing
this.
Gary Grimes is a musician, the original "Paul" in the band 1964:
The Tribute and, as such, has entertained millions of Beatles fans
for about twice as long as Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr
themselves were the Beatles, performing an unbelievable 160 concerts a
year. The remaining original band member is Mark Benson, who plays
"John".

Far beyond performing as the Fab Four, 1964 (the year the boys
from Liverpool first came to the United States, playing, among other
venues, at the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater located in the foothills
near Morrison, west of Denver) have acquired a fan following all their
own. My family has been to eight of their concerts (I missed one)
altogether.
Gary could easily have held his fans at arm's length, but he did
just the opposite, maintaining various kinds of correspondence with
them over the years. He seemed to be especially kind and friendly with
my daughter. On one occasion, when 1964 appeared in Greeley,
Colorado, their intimate contact with the public gave all of them the
flu.
In addition to his labor of love with 1964, Gary had a solo
career of his own, composing, performing, and recording his own
material.

Despite their daunting schedule and their millions of fans, Gary's
passing will not generate international headlines. Gary is not a
life-sucking politician. Nor has he been some spoiled and destructive
"star", but an honest, hardworking musician dedicated to preserving
something wonderful and important, and that is the influence on our
culture, our music, and, most of all, on individuals, of the early
Beatles.
I have no idea what politics, if any, Gary has, nor do I care. All
I know is that he made my womenfolk happy, that he brought the 1960s
back to me in a way that felt good, and that the two-hour concerts he
and his mates gave always seemed like they were only twenty minutes
long.
He will be missed.
