A Servant of Their Rights
by L. Neil Smith
Three seemingly unrelated stories in the news this week together show clearly the sort of mess we've gotten into as a civilization, and point to what we must do (and undo) if we ever want our culture back again.

Telecom: From Monopoly to Portability
by Afrikanus Kofi Akosah Adusei
I distinctly remember travelling in the 1980s with my mom all the way to the capital city, a distance of 240 km, before we could make bookings and wait, only God knows how long, for our turn to make IDD phone calls. That was the dark old days of the Ghana Post and Telecommunications monopoly.

How to Live Free in an Unfree Internet
by DataPacRat
Given the nature of most governments worldwide, the only way to say certain things without risk of being arrested (or worse) is to do so anonymously, in a way that cannot be traced to your physical self. However, in order to have what you say be paid attention to, you also need to be able to say more than one thing, and have those things tied to a single identity: a pseudonym. Almost everyone on the internet has some 'handle'; the hard part is having a pseudonym that allows you to remain anonymous.

The Tomorrow Series, by John Marsden
a review by Eric Oppen
Recently, I became aware of a series of young-adult books from Australia called The Tomorrow Series. While they're big sellers in Australia and New Zealand, they're not nearly as well-known here in the States; the first three books of the seven-book series didn't sell well, and the last four books were only recently published here. Whether this is due to their setting in rural Australia, the publishers' incompetence or failure to properly market them, or other factors, is not something on which I feel competent to speculate. I was lucky to find all seven books in a library I patronize. [And we have links to all—Editor]

The Organization of the Resistance Part One
by Lucifer Geraldo
The guerrillas are referred to in SF doctrine as irregular forces. This means that the troops mustered didn't come from military or police units of the State. They're civilians, mostly. The core leadership of the guerrillas will most definitely be made up of ex-State military. They know how to lead and train military units. They will turn civilians into soldiers and lead those soldiers in small unit operations against the enemy State in the cause of human Liberty.
