The unabridged audio version of my 1983 novel The Nagasaki Vector, brilliantly read by the great libertarian radio host Brian Wilson, is finally available for purchase.

Many feel that this is the funniest book I've written so far—at least intentionally—and features our old friend Win Bear, G. Howell Nahuatl, a sapient coyote, time traveler Bernie Gruenblum, and Georgie, the time machine who loves him.

The price: $12.99.
The place: CD Baby.

I understand that it will soon be available in iTunes, as well.

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

STATEMENT FROM THE PUBLISHER

In November of 1956, Hungarian Cardinal József Mindszenty, who had been imprisoned repeatedly by various authoritarian governments he had resisted, and brutally tortured by the communists, sought sanctuary in the United States embassy in Budapest. Back then, our side at least tried to look like the goodguys.

Mindszenty remained trapped (and increasingly resented) in the embassy for the next fifteen years, finally being allowed to leave Hungary in 1971 by the then-current government. In 1973, because he wouldn't play various shady games between the Hungarians and the Vatican, he was stripped of his various titles and honors by Pope Paul VI, and died in Vienna in 1975 at the age of 83.

Now another resistor against authority, Julian Assange, is similarly trapped in the Ecuadoran embassy in London, and the forces keeping him there are the governments of the once-free nations of Britain and America. Assange's "crime" is the release of information, generated or gathered at public expense by those and other governments, which have no right to keep secrets from the people who are supposed to own and control them.

The conscience of liberty demands: Free Julian Assange.

No more secrets, no more lies.

And now back to the editor. I'll recommend some reading:

Enthymemetic Warfare: Or, Seeing the Fnords
by Kevin Carson

In classical logic, the standard model of deductive reasoning is the syllogism. Most people are probably familiar with this example: All men are mortal. Socrates is a man. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

The enthymeme is an incomplete syllogism with one of the premises left implicit. In classical rhetoric, a speaker uses an enthymeme to appeal to the unstated shared assumptions of the audience. The unstated premise is an unexamined cultural assumption—frequently a prejudice—shared by the audience, which is left unstated because to state it might invite critical examination.

Rumors of War
by L. Neil Smith
Unless you've been doing wall paintings in a Spanish cave, you'll be aware that earlier this year, the federal Department of Homeland Security has ordered 450,000,000 rounds of hollowpoint .40 S&W pistol ammunition. Look at that number again: four hundred fifty million. That's half again the population of the United States. Or, the way these goons usually shoot, almost enough to kill a million peole.

Constitution-bashing, a strategic error?
by Paul Bonneau
By now it is commonplace to see articles and books whacking the Constitution; I've written them myself. Certainly, it is hard for anyone who has a modicum of historical knowledge and a realistic understanding of human nature to have much use for the Constitution. Yet, could we be making a strategic mistake?

Drones

My father was an Army Air Corps bombardier during World War II. To make it perfectly clear, he sat up in the plexiglass nose of a B-17 and dropped explosives on people and things that passed underneath his airplane. about firearms?

Drug Tests and Welfare

You see the posts everywhere. If I have to take a drug test for my job you should have to take one to collect welfare as if some how millions of welfare recipients would get cut off and all the employed folks would receive massive refunds. Ain't gonna happen!

The Most Important Election Ever?

Someone tried telling me the other day that this upcoming election between Obama and Romney was "really important." "Oh, you've gotta vote in this one," they told me. "This one really matters."

When System F Is Full of Fail
by Jim Davidson
It goes by many names. Some call it "the black market," or "the underground economy." Sam Konkin called it "the counter-establishment economy" or just "counter economy." In Germany, it is sometimes known as "trick 17." The Finnish call it kikka kolmonen or "Trick 3." One of the more widely used terms today is "System D" which derives from the French term Systme D. The French words débrouillard and démerder seem to be the source of the "D" in system D. The verb se débrouiller means "to untangle" which suggests the entanglements that come with involving the government in any way. The verb se démerder literally means to remove oneself from "the shit" or to keep clear of manure.

Gary Me Not On The Lone Prairie
by L. Neil Smith
I live in what's known politically as a "swing state". At this particular moment, according to a Rasmussen Poll, I think, the Democratic and Republican Presidential candidates are tied at 47 percent. That's 94 percent, altogether, for the Boot On Your Neck party. But it's also a fairly odd thing. As an author and publisher, I know lots of people, not all of them libertarians or conservatives as you might expect. Not a single one of them is willing even to think about voting for Barack H. Obama, or whatever his name is. What's more, not one of them has any interest in voting for the guy whose folks, for one reason or another, saw fit to name him after a baseball glove. Nobody I know wants Obama or Romney, nobody. And yet ... And yet ... Here we are. Again.
