The Lone and Level Sands
by L. Neil Smith
What follows is a short story I was commissioned to
write for a collection called Future Washington, edited by Ernest
Lilly and published in October 2005, a few weeks before I'd finished
Ceres. in some ways it is a sequel to Ceres, occurring 12
years after the novel concludes. In others, it is a prequel to a novel I
haven't written much about yet. It is to be called Rosalie's World,
in which we follow Llyra and Morgan and their growing family to the world
her great grandfather Emerson Ngu discovered, and named after her great grandmother.

Dear Mr. Security Agent
by Matt Bracken
Dear Mr. Security Agent, Federal, state, or local. You, the
man or woman with the badge, the sworn LEO or FLEA and those who inhabit the many
law enforcement niches in between and on all sides. This essay is directed to you,
because in the end, how this turmoil about gun control turns out will depend largely
upon your decisions and actions over the coming months and years.

Am I The Last To Know?
by Madison MacBear
Sometimes I feel like I'm retreading old ground. I'll find a new,
exciting bit of information, rush out to tell all my friends, and then
find that everyone already knows about it, and has for years. As the
wise man said, "things you aren't aware of fill libraries." Perhaps
I'm the Vanka-come-lately, and everyone here already knows that the
FedGov is only treating people they way they have asked to be treated.
Perhaps everyone on this forum already knows that by calling
themselves "United States citizen", "U.S. person", or "taxpayer", that
they are giving up their protected-by-the-Constitution rights in favor
of being ruled by the Congress. Perhaps I have missed the discussion,
and should rifle through the back issues of The Libertarian Enterprise
to find where El Neil and friends talk about electing a domicile on
federal territory, and how it causes the elector to knowingly,
willfully, with full knowledge aforethought (or at least, so it is
judged by the law) give up all the rights due a freeborn sovereign in
favor of absolute rule by the Congress, and the few privileges which
they, in their infinite disdain, disdeign to grant them.

Inspiration
by Neale Osborn
How many times have we heard/read the line "Fine. If you want to
excercise your 2nd Amendment rights to keep and bear arms, then get a flintlock musket.
Because our forefathers couldn't possibly have foreseen fully automatic assault weapons!"
(usually in a smarmy voice). I'm sure others have said similar things, but today,
Jim Comfort said it so well, I have to copy it here: If you want a forum with which to
exercise your individual right to free speech, get off the internet and go stand on a
stump in the town square.

Who are the ideological forebears of the modern Gun Control Crowd?
by Neale Osborn
Recently, a friend of mine sent me a video of a tattoo'd man ranting
against the Gun Control crowd, and told me that THIS is what my
support of the 2nd Amendment would lead me to. The video's final
words were "If it goes one inch further I'm gonnatart killin'
people!" He was not eloquent, but he summed up a lot of the
frustration many of us feel. But I admit that to many, he would be a
reason to ridicule support of the 2nd Amendment. So I thought that
all people should read the words of the most famous people who
support their desire to strip American citizens of their Right to
Keep and Bear Arms. Some supporters claim only to want to restrict a
"few extra dangerous types of weapons, and high capacity magazines.
Others are opposed to carry, open or concealed, of handguns. And
some admit to wanting ALL guns removed from private ownership. But
ALL of them have one thing in common. Not one single historical
figure who espoused the same ideas was a supporter of individual
rights or personal freedoms. They were all dictators.

His Majesty Obama and the Debt Ceiling
by Wendy McElroy
President Obama may be poised to claim an unprecedented executive
power. Or not. It depends on whether you credit official denials from White House Press
Secretary Jay Carney or public statements from high-ranking Democrats. The monarchical
power in question is the ability to raise the debt ceiling at will. It involves bypassing
the House of Representatives, which currently has the constitutional authority to initiate
all revenue bills.
