I am not a lawyer. Nor do I play one on TV. But this gives me an
advantage: I am still able to read, and to think. I can count the lawyers I know who
are still capable of that on the fingers of one elbow. Okay, that may be a slight
exaggeration. Some of my best friends, as the saying goes, are lawyers. But like
most libertarians and decent conservatives, I discovered, somewhere back along the
line, that there is nary an attorney in this country who possesses the memory, or
the understanding of history and human nature, manifested by the average cocker
spaniel, or, when pressed, can think his way out of a wet paper bag.

A couple of weeks ago reports began surfacing that human intelligence
has gone down since the Victorian Era, at least in Western nations (See "Were the Victorians
cleverer than us? Research indicates a decline in brainpower and reflex speed" by Nick Mcdermott
for example). The basic thesis of these articles. often going back to the same particular research,
is that since about 1899 average IQ has gone down 14 points as determined by measuring visual
reaction time. I myself thought the inability to come up with original titles was a clue, but
what do I know?

Sixty Years a Rubber Stamp by Sean Gabb
Those of us who pay attention to such things will have noticed a difference
between the BBC coverage of the Golden Jubilee in 2002 and of the present Diamond Jubilee. Ten
years ago, the coverage was adequate, though reluctant and even a little stiff. This time, it
has been gushing and completely uncritical. There are various possible reasons for my observation.
The first is that I was mistaken then and am mistaken now. I do not think this is the case, but
feel obliged to mention it. The second is that Golden Jubilees are rare events, and Diamond
Jubilees very rare events, and that extreme rarity justifies a setting aside of republican
scruples. The third is that the BBC was taken by surprise in 2002 by the scale of public
enthusiasm, and does not wish to be caught out again. The fourth is that, while not
particularly conservative on main issues, we do now have a Conservative Government, and this is
headed by a cousin of Her Majesty. There may be many other reasons.

background music, too!) I want him on MY side WTSHTF. Most here know by now that I am
not a fan of the NRA because it has compromised too often, and actually written more
gun banning bills than anyone else (since the NFA '34, in fact, which they sponsored
and helped write). But you gotta love this kid, and the response his little act of
grade school hooliganry received....

EDITORIAL MATTERS
I have had a hard week, my wife is ill and I have been taking care
of her. She is not fully recovered yet, but is better than she was and
improving some every day. Thank you all who sent "get well"s.
There has been some sort of flap about privacy, or the lack of
privacy, or The Powers That Be not having any respect for privacy.
I have not been able to pay much attention to this, but not having
respect for our privacy sounds like a hanging offence to me.
