 Tomorrow
by L. Neil Smith
I remember what the future used to look like. Maybe you do, too.
For the most part, in what were called the "Sunday Supplements" of America's daily
newspapers (or the decorative endpapers of some of my favorite "Young Readers'" books),
it consisted of crowds of healthy, happy human beings, men, women, and children,
colorfully but lightly dressed for their weather-controlled environment, inhabiting
glass and silver cities shining in the golden sun, swarmed about by tiny private
aircraft, levitating automobiles, and individuals hurling themselves through the air
on jet-pack harnesses, while an atomic-powered flying wing passed by overhead, and a
V2-shaped rocket ship blasted for the stars.

 America: Opting Out
by Jonathan David Morris
Sometimes people move. Sometimes they move close, like down the street
or the other side of the neighborhood. And sometimes people move further away, like the next
town over, the next state over, or sometimes across the country. Sometimes people move out
of the country. Sometimes they move across the world.

 Lincolnolatry
by Rex May
No, that's not Abe Lincoln, there, though it does look a lot like him,
don't you think? It's the hired gun, Daisuke Jigen. They really have a lot in common, both
apparently having learned their trade in the nasty streets of Chicago, the main difference
being that Jigen does his own killing and doesn't pretend to any kind of moral superiority
or any of that "four score and seven" blather.

WARNING! A False Flag Group Launches Today
The American Rifle and Pistol Association (ARPA) is a FRAUD!
 by Buckeye Firearms Association
Do you remember the phoney "American Hunters and Shooters Association"
that pretended to support gun rights ... but actually advocated more gun control and endorsed
(surprise, surprise) Barack Obama? Well, now with the 2014 elections gearing up, another fake
gun group has popped up claiming to support "sane" gun ownership. They're called the American
Rifle and Pistol Association and they're officially launching today, July 4. But don't be
fooled by all the firearm photos on their Facebook page or all the Second Amendment talk on
their colorful website.

 A Dog Defends His Territory
by Paul Bonneau
You are walking along a road, and come by a place with a chain-link
fence. A dog comes rushing out snarling and barks at you as you go by. Continuing on, he
finally stops barking and with a "Woof" goes back to his den, keeping an eye on you as
you walk out of his view. What changes if there is no fence? Almost nothing! He still
comes rushing out snarling, he still stops at a particular point as if a fence were
there. It's a little scarier for you, but for him it is the same. At some point—unless
you encourage him by running from him—he loses confidence and aggression melts away. He
is on less sure terms outside of his territory.

Time to End the Persecution of the Street Preachers
by John Kersey
Today's Daily Telegraph reports the treatment of an American
street pastor who was arrested after preaching outside a Wimbledon shopping centre. Tony
Miano, who in one of life's little ironies is a former senior police officer, expounded a
passage from Thessalonians which deals with sexual immorality and cited homosexuality as
an example of contravention of the law of God. A woman hearing this made a complaint to
police, and two officers promptly arrested Mr Miano under Section 5 of the Public Order
Act 1986 which deals with "insulting words and behaviour". As Mr Miano explained to the
officers, Section 5 has recently been amended so that what is merely insulting is no longer
to be an offence. However, despite having been passed by the House of Lords, this change has
yet to come into law and the arresting officers claimed that they were unaware of it.

Neale's Weekly Gun Rant Volume 17
by Neale Osborn
Feeling a touch nervous, Colorado Democrat pols? Judging by the
responses to your unconstitutional gun bans and magazine capacity limits, you should
be. How many of you are facing recall elections? exactly how many businesses are leaving
Colorado? How many planned hunts (a HUGE source of Colorado income, and the livelihood of
thousands in the Rockies) have been cancelled? Oh yeah, you jackasses are gonna feel the
pain. Today (6-30-2013) you have a mile a half mile long waiting for the 1500 free 30
round magazines (provided by one of the companies you pissed off, MagPul Industries) and
the 18500 others they provided for sale prior to implementation of this unconstitutional law.

EDITORIAL MATTERS

First, our Publisher, Mr. L. Neil Smith informs me that next week,
he plans to offer two reviews, the first of the movie version of
J. Neil Schulman's classic libertarian novel, Alongside Night,
and the second of an incredibly stupid book by a guy who thinks
that the libertarian movement's biggest problem in the Zero
Aggression Principle, which should be dispensed with immediately.
Neil says the poor fool doesn't seem to understand that the Zero
Aggression Principle is the libertarian movement. He will
be ripping a new one for the fellow. Tune in next week.
 I found this interesting:

To everyone who predicts "riots in the streets" for whatever
reason....
There are three reasons we haven't seen mass riots of
economically lower class minority youth (pretty much the
only Americans who riot) in years, and likely will not any
time soon:

Poor youth have air conditioning now
Poor youth have text messaging now
Poor youth have playstation and xbox now

They're too lazy, comfortable, and entertained by other
things, to bother with rioting... Rioting is hard, and hot,
and not all that fun... it's too much work.

Note... I say this not because I think minorities are
lazy... but because YOUTH, economically lower class or
otherwise, minority or otherwise; are, for the most part,
lazy and complacent; and busy doing other things.

This fellow tells 'em what for:

"Take your message of equality of achievement, take your
message of economic dependency, take your message of
enslaving the entrepreneurial will and spirit of the
American people somewhere else," he continued. "You can
take it to Europe, you can take it to the bottom of the
sea, you can take it to the North Pole, but get the hell
out of the United States of America."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Minority Leader
Nancy Pelosi and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman

A philosopher considers that it's not just surveillance that is so bad,
but lying, systematic, deliberate, and directed lying:

The Real War on Reality
By Peter Ludlow

If there is one thing we can take away from the news
of recent weeks it is this: the modern American
surveillance state is not really the stuff of
 paranoid fantasies; it has arrived...

But those revelations, captivating as they are, have
been partial—they primarily focus on one government
agency and on the surveillance end of intelligence
work, purportedly done in the interest of national
security. What has received less attention is the
fact that most intelligence work today is not carried
out by government agencies but by private intelligence
firms and that much of that work involves another
common aspect of intelligence work: deception. That
is, it is involved not just with the concealment of
reality, but with the manufacture of it.

The realm of secrecy and deception among shadowy yet
powerful forces may sound like the province of
 investigative reporters, thriller novelists and
Hollywood moviemakers—and it is—but it is
also a matter for philosophers. More accurately,
understanding deception and and how it can be
exposed has been a principle project of philosophy
for the last 2500 years. And it is a place where
the work of journalists, philosophers and other
 truth-seekers can meet.

Unfortunatley many of those masters of secrecy and deception are journalists,
philosophers and pretend truth-seekers. They are everywhere!
Here is something of interest for the do-it-yerselfer:

RepRap is humanity's first general-purpose self-replicating
manufacturing machine.
RepRap takes the form of a free desktop 3D printer capable
of printing plastic objects. Since many parts of RepRap are
made from plastic and RepRap prints those parts, RepRap
self-replicates by making a kit of itself—a kit that
anyone can assemble given time and materials. It also
 means that—if you've got a RepRap—you can print lots
of useful stuff, and you can print another RepRap for a
 friend...

 Another good read:

Lincoln's Surveillance State
By David T. Z. Mindich

COLCHESTER, Vt.—BY leaking details of the National
 Security Agency's data-mining program, Edward J. Snowden
revealed that the government's surveillance efforts were
far more extensive than previously understood. Many
commentators have deemed the government's activities
alarming and unprecedented. The N.S.A.'s program is
indeed alarming—but not, from a historical perspective,
unprecedented. And history suggests that we should
worry less about the surveillance itself and more
about when the war in whose name the surveillance is
 being conducted will end.
In 1862, after President Abraham Lincoln appointed
him secretary of war, Edwin M. Stanton penned a letter
to the president requesting sweeping powers, which
would include total control of the telegraph lines.
By rerouting those lines through his office, Stanton
would keep tabs on vast amounts of communication,
journalistic, governmental and personal. On the
back of Stanton's letter Lincoln scribbled his
approval: "The Secretary of War has my authority
to exercise his discretion in the matter within
 mentioned."
