Cry No More

I grew up in a country that was decaying from an imagined great
height where it got to divide the world in two with its hated next door neighbor.
The height was largely imagined for various reasons, but the quickest one to explain
would be that Portugal never had a mercantile empire, a manufacturing base to back
their "rule of the world." There was no middle-class culture. So all the raw materials
from the colonies, all the gold from South America, made a short stop in Portugal
and then went on to enrich countries that did have a middle class culture, such as
Britain and Holand.

Soft Pink Hands

As Sun Tzu so famously wrote, "In seeking to create new allies from old enemies,
the Superior Man does not cast under the chariot fellow travelers who have supported him hitherto."
In "Letter from L. Neil Smith", Sovereign El Neil writes, "It may wet the panties of every ... 'Agorist'
who thinks he's too good to dirty his soft pink hands with politics, but the ... only way to control
the government is to become the government." He calls this an "undeniable truth." Sovereign El
Neil referenced my soft pink hands, but he somehow failed to mention my pale, limpid eyes (one of my
best features). I do not mind when statists call Agorism evil, unbalanced, or supporting of terrorists,
child molesters, and money laundering. I simply look to the grand and glorious tradition of Agorism
throughout history. After all, without Agorists, Napoleon's autarky would have collapsed early. Without
Agorists, the Underground Railroad (freedom as contraband) would not have existed. Without Agorists,
the patrons of Isher's weapons shops ("The right to buy contraband is the right to be free.") would not
have had the option. And from whom does Sovereign El Neil think he will buy ammunition in the future,
when the Feds have cut off all "legitimate" sources?

This book is the conjectural autobiography of Louis, a friend's dog.
It starts with his meeting, as a puppy, with his human family, and ends with the inevitable
last appointment with the vet. Between these points, we have all the usual highs and lows
of a dog's life. If you have never had a dog—if, indeed, you have no affection for
animals—the book will leave you cold. If you are such a person, there is nothing I or
anyone else can say to make you buy it. Fortunately, however, we are a nation of dog-lovers.
If you are, or ever have been, a dog-owner, you will find something on every page with which
to agree or identify. Partly, I think, because of my present mood, it left me feeling sad,
and a little guilty.
