Shut Up Telling Me Shut Up
by L. Neil Smith
Radio and Internet were full, this past week, of stories, cycled over and over, of a young student at Harvard who should be suing that overrated pile of bricks for failing to provide her with a decent education, instead of spreading the rotten education she did receive there. Her name is Sandra Korn, and she's a senior, who writes a column for the Harvard Crimson—one of the most appropriately-named publications in the world—expressing the view that her brand of radical leftism is the only permissible political philosophy, and the the First Amendment only hinders institutions like Harvard in its noble struggle to convey it. Free speech on campus should therefore be abolished, as an unnecessary and dangerous luxury, and professors with an opposing view should be fired—much as liberal Canadian "science guy" David Suzuki wanted to do a few years ago with Global Warming "deniers".

Please Plan Accordingly
by Andrew Offutt
On Saturday, March 1, 2014 I attended a RK gun show on Jonesboro Road in Atlanta I met a retired police officer who now owns a franchise with Noah's Pantry, a company that manufacturers emergency/survival food. He lives in Tennessee on 20+ acres, at the end of a long dirt road. He told me that not long ago, around 10pm, he saw 3 cars coming up his 1/4 mile driveway. The cars stopped about 300 feet from his house. The occupants turned off their car lights. Through the dark he was able to make out 4 men silently walking toward his house. With his AR-15 in hand, he exited the rear of his home, circled around and waited on the edge of his porch. When the men stepped on the porch he turned on a bright flashlight and said, "Hands in the air". The 4 men complied. They were the sheriffs of two Tennessee counties, one deputy and a FEMA officer. All were armed.

From the Rust Belt to the Asteroid Belt: Greater Appalachia & the Freeholder's Dilemma
by Jeff Fullerton
A few days after the turning of the New Year—I learned of a new concept of America as a patchwork of several distinct regional sub-cultures that are in a way like nations. It brought back memories of a conversational thread one Sunday eve last summer on the front porch of the Redneck Chateau. My friend Bruce the Historian may have been right after all in his assessment of the rural culture of western Pennsylvania as an outlier of the West. I stumbled on this interesting tidbit while kicking back after a day trip with him to the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh.

The 100% Armed Society
by Paul Bonneau
It is interesting to think how differently a 100% armed society would work, in contrast to what we are familiar with. One might ask, "Why bother? It could never happen..." Well, there are many things that could never happen in the past, that eventually did happen. One possible example of a 100% armed society that is easy to conceive right now is a voluntary community that includes a contractual agreement for those joining it, including a commitment to always go armed. With guns now available such as the "no excuses" (to be disarmed) Keltec P-32 and P3AT, this would hardly be any kind of burden, literal or financial. Social pressures in such a community would keep the commitment operating.

The Trap of Politics
by J. Neil Schulman
Barack Obama spoke of teachable moments. Libertarians who imagine their beliefs can gain political traction have just had a teachable moment. It remains to be seen whether the lesson will be learned.

A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

Okay, I freely admit from the outset that the following is wholly selfish and self-serving. I guess I'm entitled to that from time to time.

It makes me inexpressibly happy to announce that my beautiful and talented daughter has presented me with a brand new bouncing baby ... musical.

Out of the clear blue (or these days, gray and frozen) sky, the young person best known to Internet and FaceBook as Giovanni Angelo Martelli, or just "Gianni" (pronounced "Johnny") has determined to put together and direct a local, but entirely professional production of 1776.

That's right, the splendiferous, sprawling musical story of the signing of the Declaration of Independence that first brilliantly starred William Daniels (the voice of "Kit" in _Knight Rider_) as John Adams—more recently it's been Brent Spiner—Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson, and Blythe Danner who will tear your heart out as Martha Jefferson. I love the movie, and it almost never fails, at one point or another to make me weep with joy at a point in history in which almost everybody seemed to know what was going on, and what the issues were.

And here, for me, at least, is the best part. I get to perform the part of John Hancock, President of Congress. Not all readers of my fiction and non-fiction are aware that I worked as a musician through high school, college, and the early days of my first marriage. I haven't performed publicly for a long time and I'm more excited about it than I can quite express. I hereby promise to address the role with all of the dignity, all of the style and grace, that Ernie's ancestor deserves.

Gianni and I will be back next week with more details and a chance for you to participate at a time when this play has more meaning than ever.

I am, believe me,
Y'r Humble & Ob'd't,

For years I've been saying (semi-rehtorically) "where's them rejuvination pills?" Well, now:

Pill could help humans live longer
By Keith Perry

A pill which could ward off ageing has come a step closer after tests of a rejuvenating drug that prolongs healthy life.

Scientists found that activating a protein called sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) extended the lives of mice and delayed the onset of age-related diseases.

They believe their experiments could lead to drugs that help to keep people younger and healthier.

SIRT1 and its sister protein SIRT2 are known to play a important roles in metabolism across a wide range of species.

They are involved in DNA repair and gene regulation, and may help to prevent diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Connecticut Patriot Group Fights Back Against Confiscation Order: 'We Are Armed... And Are Familiar With the Finer Points of Marksmanship'
by Mac Slavo
The war on liberty is coming to a head in Connecticut, where tens of thousands of gun owners have refused to comply with their state government's gun registration laws. Officials have literally ordered those who failed to meet the registration deadline to surrender their firearms or face arrest.
