An Excerpt from Blade of p'Na (Forthcoming)
by L. Neil Smith
The nearest city of any size on this world lies 500 miles north of
the northwest coast of the Inland Sea where Eichra Oren and I live. It was named by humans,
who for fifteen thousand years have called it Lanternlight. It's said there's a city there,
in the S-bend of a great river, in a hundred thousand alternate worlds. Easy, rapid
transportation and near-perfect communication have made such collections of individuals
and buildings pretty much obsolete in this one. Add to that the fact that the landwelling
population of the Elders' Earth is sparse, no more than a couple hundred million sapients on
the whole planet, all of them Appropriated Persons or their descendants, and well spread out.

Still M.A.D. After All These Years?
by L. Reichard White
According to Mr. Obama's main-stream propaganda arm, the Russians are
rattling their nukes. Again. And, via. ABC's March 9th ThisWeek, so is Washington D.C.
Back in the 1950's and '60s the nuclear powers—in their infinite wisdom (and with something
like 65,000 Military-Industrial-Congressional-Complex nukes on hair trigger)—came up with
an excuse for their psychotic behavior. They called it "Mutually Assured
Destruction." M.A.D. for short. The idea was, "If you blow the
people who live in my territorial area to Kingdom Come, I'll do the same to yours."
Small print: "We're not too worried. We have well-buried undisclosed locations to hide in."

So Long Piers
by Sean Gangol
As most of us know by now, especially L. Neil Smith, Piers Morgan made
his final broadcast on CNN. I know that Neil has already written a farewell message, but I
have been itching to write my own, every since I first saw Morgan on CNN. I can't say that
I am surprised by this. What does surprise me is that they let him stay on the air as long
as they did. I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering the joke of a network that is CNN.

Movie Review-Commentary:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (SPOILERS!)
by Terence James Mason
What follows is a review with commentary of Captain America, The
Winter Soldier (Disney/Marvel, 2014). As such, it contains spoilers for the movie,
so please stop here if you wish to maintain your surprise. I don't know if I have that
much to add to the commentary and coverage appearing elsewhere, but I did want to throw
my two cents worth in regarding the new Captain America movie, and particularly its messages
pertaining to political liberty.

It's Not Just About Turtles Anymore: Environmental Extremism's War on Liberty
by Jeff Fullerton
Santa Claus drives a brown truck! I always liked that phrase with which
the plantsman Don Hackenberry began his pamphlet: The World at Your Doorstep which he sent
with the first price list I received from him back in the mid 1990s. Happiness is also nice
weather and another box of turts. Two more Nihon Ishigame—little ones arrived this morning
by UPS overnight express!
