Stupid Is As Stupid Does

Why is Gwyneth Paltrow so stupid? I can't put it more simply or
politely. She looks smart enough, and is very attractive, to me, at least. But to
judge from remarks she made the other day, the woman can't think her way out of a
wet paper bag. I know many people think I put too much emphasis on looks, but it's
a cold, dark, hostile universe out there. Here and there along our winding path,
there are a few bright lights. Beautiful women who are willing to share their
beauty with all of us cannot be thanked enough.

T Minus Two Months (Or Less): The Countdown to Norseman's Hell Begins

Friday October Third 2014. Possibly the last perfect day in
Greater Appalachia. At last the start of it anyway; which was warm and sunny and
well into the upper 70s at least. But the clouds that moved in and then out again
for yet another burst of warmth before what seems to be setting the stage for the
rains that were promised to set in by afternoon. And that will probably be the
beginning of the end of the Renaissance Summer which started out on the cool side
of "normal" and wet at times before drying out right after the logging operation
ended in late August. And now it has been very dry bordering on the verge of drought
conditions which were slightly quenched by a brief soaking rain a few days ago. And
maybe soon more rain will fall in the advance of a coming Canadian air mass that
promises the possibility of severe storms followed by a dramatic shift to fall like
conditions and even a little taste of winter in the mix!

The Tale of Two Movies

There was a movie that I have been wanting to discuss for quite
some time, but unfortunately I found more pressing subjects to write about, so it got
pushed to the back of my mind. I decided to approach the subject again after seeing
another movie that had a similar theme. So there are now two movies that I am going
to discuss. The first movie was the remake of the sci-fi classic, "The Day the Earth
Stood Still." Yes, the original is far better than the remake (understatement of the
decade). Though I will say that the logic of the aliens in the original movie was
somewhat flawed. It seemed absurd and hypocritical to try to prevent violence by
keeping a giant robot on Earth that is willing to vaporize anybody that shows
aggression. "Be peaceful, damn it! And don't you dare point out the irony of using
violence to prevent violence!"

No Guns?

The anti-gun people often tell us that a criminal would simply take
a gun away from you and, probably, use it to kill you instead. OK, it could certainly
happen, and probably does sometimes. We read often enough about victims who manage to
take the criminal's gun and use it against him or her. It's a possibility either way.
Is it the most likely outcome of using a gun in self defense? Does that make it
pointless to have a gun in the first place? Of course not.

He's back!
Yes, this issue welcomes our Publisher, Mr. L. Neil Smith,
back to work! He's been away fiddling with a bit of bother
caused by a stroke. Back to work!
Behold a meditation on the Enemies of Freedom from Sarah
Hoyt:
They need to be exposed for what they are, because, as
everywhere where the left gets power, they're a weird,
misshapen assemblage of overreaching bureaucrats,
twisted control freaks and lamentable human beings.
Illegal mistreatment of their political "enemies" and
hatred of western civilization is what they DO. And
the bizarre politeness of those who disagree with them
is what allows them to do it.
People criticize Mitt Romney for saying that Obama was
a good man. How could he have said otherwise. If he'd
called the man the rabid crapweasel he is, half the
right or more would have risen to dissociate themselves
from him, because they've been trained to think it's
somehow not fair or impolite to expose the left.
This is not belief. This is social conditioning,
through all the years when it was accepted the "smart"
and "nice" were on the left.
Even I was shocked reading a biography of Carter—did
you know he tried to sell us to the Russians in return
for help with his second election?—because I too had
been sold on the idea he was only ineffective because
he was so nice.
They're not your friends. They're not nice. They're
not idealistic. No idealistic left survived the
combined blows of Stalinism and the fall of the USSR.
There's only, now, cynical left pretending to be
idealistic to hide their grossly swollen appetite
for power.
They've lost even their power of self deception.
All they have now is the naked will to power and
you—you who dare stand in their way.
This is not a gentlemanly fight. You are NOT to use
the Marquess of Queensbury rules. The other guy is
holding a broken bottle.
No one is asking you to make yourself into a mirror
image of the crapweasels.
But you should not be ashamed to expose them, make
them uncomfortable, scream at them or point their
vapid intellectual contradictions and contortions.
Breitbart wasn't afraid, and look at the difference
he made.
Stop trying to be nice. They aren't.
Expose, mock and shame.
Being nice is a poor substitute for being good.
And you're called upon to be good. If you're merely
nice, evil wins.

Workers of the World, Goodbye

There was something pathetically nostalgic at the
specter earlier this month of fast-food workers
demanding compensation to the tune of $15 an hour
for performing jobs that require almost no skills
beyond not being in a coma. It recalled a halcyon
age very long ago when management depended on
menial labor, when a general strike of unskilled
workers could bring bosses to their knees.
But now a company called Momentum Machines is
touting a device that can allegedly shoot out 360
custom-ordered and fully wrapped burgers per hour,
rendering the very idea of an exploited and
undercompensated "fast-food worker" a quaint relic
of a musty bygone age. According to the company's
website, "It does everything employees can do except
better." The machine will also presumably never call
in sick, never get an order wrong, and will not tamper
with food due to spite or boredom. It will also never
demand a raise. According to the company's co-founder,
"Our device isn't meant to make employees more
efficient. It's meant to completely obviate them."
As someone who worked a string of dirty, low-paying,
soul-smashing jobs—including a stint as a French-fry
chef at Wendy's—to put myself through college, I bear
witness that there is nothing remotely noble about
being a menial laborer. It is a rancid myth, only a
notch or two up the evolutionary ladder from the myth
of the noble savage.
