Dianne Feinstein: Menace or Threat?
by L. Neil Smith
Most human beings possess a highly peculiar power: the "willing suspension of disbelief". Throughout history (and probably prehistory, as well) individuals who would rather make up and tell stories than actually work for a living, from Sophocles to yours truly, have relied on that ability—to forget all about dismal reality for a while and enjoy an entertainingly composed lie—for their daily bread.

Racism is an "Equal Opportunity Employer"
The Kaptain's Log

by Manuel Miles, (a.k.a, Kaptain Kanada)
Somebody should warn L. Neil Smith not to read this because the shock may kill him; I've been telling him I was going to write this article (and one other) for about six months now and I've finally got round to it. I'd have written it sooner, but my doctor told me to try to keep my blood pressure down. And believe it or not, kids, your kindly old Kaptain can get rather upset at times...

It Was So Cold (A complete one paragraph story)
by Ferdinand John Reinke
It was cold. So cold. He'd never been so cold. The heat in the house was set to 40. People had to fend for themselves, but the pipes had to be kept from freezing. How many decades had they struggled? He mused as his body tried to warm the bed and blankets. More than two. The "carbon tax" to prevent "global warming" was the event that had started them down a road to "hell frozen over". But, other things had set the stage. Even the children and grandchildren were impoverished. They all lived with him. He wept....

What IS a "Political Statement"?
by Dennis Lee Wilson
In philosophy, the study of politics is the study of interpersonal relationships, i.e. the study of how people interact with each other. A particular political system will be a result of—a reflection of and guided by—a particular code of ethics or morality. A dominant form of morality (usually held implicitly) is selflessness and altruism and that leads to a political system with some form of authoritarianism. The Covenant of Unanimous Consent is explicitly guided by and a reflection of the ethical/moral principle contained in the Non-Aggression Principle.

When Law is Outlawed Only Outlaws Will Have Law
by J. Neil Schulman
What? The title of this article reads like a Zen Kôan, the best-known being "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" I don't mean my title as a mystery or a riddle. I mean it exactly.

The Value of Education
by Sean Gabb
I went yesterday evening to a seminar arranged in London by the Social Affairs Unit. This began with a brief lecture by Theodore Dalrymple, a doctor who writes an occasional column for The Spectator. His theme was "The Proletarianisation of British Culture". He explained how notions of politeness and restraint were vanishing from the middle classes, being replaced by an increasing vulgarity of thought and behaviour; and that this was not a vulgarity copied from the working classes, but was part of a general decline also affecting them. It was a brief lecture, and was intended as no more than a summary of the problem. The discussion was then thrown open for others to supply answers or other pertinent comments.

The Millennial Project Revisited: a Book Review
by Jeff Fullerton
It began in late summer of 1994 when I discovered The Millennial Project: Colonizing the Galaxy in Eight Easy Steps in a local bookstore. I leafed through it briefly with some interest but did not buy it. But the more I thought of it I decided it was something worth adding to my personal library so I went back a few weeks later only to find it was gone and I had a hard time locating it again.

EDITORIAL MATTERS

Well, now. Turns out that Joss Whedon sez he wasn't driven off Twetter by being dumped-on by his fellow Political Correctors after all. He just needed to get busy instead of foolin around with these computer things alla time. I can sure relate to that!

Speaking of getting busy, I'm reading David Copperfield now. Dang, that is one big long book! And hard to put down, too. I usually put it down when I find myself reading with one eye closed 'cause I'm so worn-out I can't get both to focus at the same time or something. Try it yourself: [eBook versions]

And my wife is reading another hard to put down book called The Martian by Andy Weir. If you haven't read that one yet, go and do it, it is excellent!: [Amazon.com] I see they (you know, them!) are making a movie of it that is coming out in the end of this year sometime. I guess I'll go see that one, although I'm getting rather tired of all the Political Correcting in movies these days. I hear that that author of a thing called The Vagina Monologues was a consultant on a new action movie just came out called Mad Max Again or something like that. The mind boggles. Boggles I say! Perhaps it is just another one of them danged intertubes falserumours or something.

Speaking of... I got interrupted and forgot what I was going to say. "So it goes...."

Also, Kaptain Kanada returns with an article in this ish. It has been a while, Kaptain, welcome back!
