THE AMERICAN CRISIS
by Thomas Paine

THE CRISIS No. I
December 19, 1776 & December 18, 2011

THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated. [Congress], with an army to enforce her tyranny, has declared that she has a right (not only to TAX) but "to BIND us in ALL CASES WHATSOEVER," and if being bound in that manner, is not slavery, then is there not such a thing as slavery upon earth. Even the expression is impious; for so unlimited a power can belong only to God.

* * *

I have as little superstition in me as any man living, but my secret opinion has ever been, and still is, that God Almighty will not give up a people to military destruction, or leave them unsupportedly to perish, who have so earnestly and so repeatedly sought to avoid the calamities of war, by every decent method which wisdom could invent. Neither have I so much of the infidel in me, as to suppose that He has relinquished the government of the world, and given us up to the care of devils; and as I do not, I cannot see on what grounds the [Congress] can look up to heaven for help against us: a common murderer, a highwayman, or a house-breaker, has as good a pretence as he.

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

A MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER

Elsewhere in the present issue of L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise, I discuss (if that's the word for it) the treacherous and predictably bi-partisan passage by Congress—on Bill of Rights Day—of the vile and blatantly illegal "National Defense Authorization Act". To say that I do not think highly of anybody who voted for the thing (or anybody who abstained from voting; are you listening, Ron Paul?) is the most massively restrained understatement I am capable of making.

We will be suggesting measures to be taken against what amounts to the worst assault on America since Pearl Harbor or the World Trade Center.

For now, we will pursue the following practice, and suggest you do the same (fair warning—we will edit contributions accordingly): when discussing individual Democratic Senators and Congressmen who voted for the NDAA, we will append to their names the epithet (DT-X), the X standing for their state, and the T standing for "traitor". Republicans who voted for the NDAA will similarly be labeled (RT-X). Those who abstained will be (DC-X) and RC-X), the C standing for "coward". [I would prefer "Mother-fucking Traitor" and "Mother-fucking Coward" myself, but I'm an uncouth country bumpkin kind of feller—Editor]

It may not be much, but, as somebody said, "All that's necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing". Or, I would add, to hide under their beds having failed to vote against the end of America.

But then, those wouldn't be good men, would they?

In fact, they wouldn't be men at all.

THE EDITOR SEZ:

Remember, the Purpose of The American Revolution was to elevate the individual to the highest political level, and to make the government a minor subservient function. Anyone who says otherwise is a fookin' liar. And that's the truth.

In Other news:

Sweeter Than Wine has been nominated for a Prometheus Award.

Down With Power will be in print and on Kindle and other such on January 20, 2012.

NEXT ISSUE: Our normal practice is to take the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's off. However this year those days are on Sunday. Considering the current War Against the American People as declared by the Government of the United States of America, we may well publish on these two holidays if circumstance requires.

TREASON!
by L. Neil Smith
On Thursday, December 15, 2011, the 220th anniversary of the Bill of Rights, members of the United States House of Representatives betrayed their oaths of office and voted overwhelmingly to follow in the felonious footsteps of their criminal accessories in the Senate, by attempting to pass the so-called "National Defense Authorization Act".

Introducing L. Neil Smith
by L. Neil Smith
From time to time I wonder, after all these years, whether it might be good to reacquaint myself with folks who know me and my work, as well as introduce myself to people who are only just discovering it. I hope that you will pardon me if the need for brevity makes very straightforward statements necessary.
