Drawing the Line
by L. Neil Smith
As another election season starts to heat up (I don't know why; nothing political in my lifetime has ever changed except by getting worse) it's time again to discuss what it's really all about this time, what the principal issue really is, a topic usually found buried in stinking darkness under tons (and centuries) of farm animal excrement. It doesn't take a Ph.D. in Political Science, or a Gypsey fortune teller (two credentials of approximately the same value. That buried topic—it's all that elections are ever all about—is human rights: what they are, where they come from, who's got 'em, and who ain't.

Freedom of Speech: A Very Brief Defence against Tanya Cohen
by Sean Gabb
I have been directed to this article, published today: ?Australia Must Have Zero Tolerance for Online Hatred", by Tanya Cohen of something called The Australian Independent Media Network. It is a very long article, and I will begin my response by quoting the passages I find most objectionable.

Getting It
by A.X. Perez
John Adams described the mob confronting the soldiers at the Boston massacre as "a motley rabble of saucy boys, Negroes, and mulattos, Irish teagues and outlandish jack tars...shouting and hazing and threatening life...whistling, screaming, and rending an Indian yell... throwing every species of rubbish the could pick up in the street."

Martin—A Seasonal Short Story
by Sean Gabb
Martin was conscious once more. His head felt like someone had hit it with a sledgehammer. Where was he? He opened his eyes and fought hard against the spotty blur he could only see at first.

Neale's Gun Rant for 3-29-2015

We're starting this off with a new author, Mama liberty. Ok, she's not new, in fact, she's been my go-to Gal for a long time. Mama is usually a pretty up-beat lady, but this one has echoes of my bad days. It's called "Nobody and Everybody".

Here is an excerpt from an interview with security expert Marc Goodman, author of Future Crimes: Everything is Connected, Everyone is Vulnerable, and What We Can Do About It. Buy at Amazon.com

"A few years ago the German Minister of Justice—kind of like the Attorney General here in the United States—he was pushing very hard for Germans to have biometric data on their national ID cards, and he wanted all Germans to be fingerprinted. And the Germans pushed back, particularly privacy advocates and those in the Chaos Computer Club. And so what they did is when the German Minister of Justice was out at a restaurant, they went ahead and after he left they got the glass that he had left behind, and they were able to lift his fingerprint off of the glass. They then took a photograph, brought it into Photoshop, cleaned it up, and then were able to replicate it on 3D printers, in latex. ... [They] included it as a handout in their _Chaos Computer Club_ magazine that went out to 5,000 people, and they encouraged their readers to leave the Justice Minister's fingerprints at crime scenes all over Germany, which they did."

Now that's pro-active!

And here, Sara Hoyt describes her activity at age 12 in standing up for truth at school (in Portugal):

[I and my friends] ... often didn't scruple to show the teacher they found their behavior reprehensible. (Among these, throwing my shoes—repeatedly—at the head of the representative of the association Portugal-Russia must rank up there in bad behavior. But the teacher knew that bringing a commie in was something I'd make her pay for, party member or not. Which I suspect kept her in check. Certainly after that there were no more commie-speakers. [Repeatedly: I'd throw a shoe then the other, when he said something that annoyed me particularly. Then I'd go collect them, put them on, and go back to sitting. When he held a shoe—commie or not, poor man, being hit by a 12 year old girl—and asked what I'd do if he didn't give it back, I pointed out I had dictionaries. Heavy ones. And that by rules he wasn't supposed to be in the school. I got my shoe back.]
