Being Frank
by L. Neil Smith
In an era when writers are discouraged from saying what they mean, this column will undoubtedly offend many individuals; if you don't like seeing sacred cows ground to hamburger, I suggest you don't read it. To begin, then:

Bill O'Reilly: Trade is Not Violence
by J. Neil Schulman
In a discussion with Fox News correspondent Ed Henry on The O'Reilly Factor for April 30th, Bill O'Reilly argued that "selling heroin is not nonviolent." Eliminating the double negative, O'Reilly is saying that the act of selling heroin is an act of violence. Bill O'Reilly, one of the most highly watched TV pundits of our time, either doesn't understand English language usage or he's deliberately conflating non-violent and violent acts in a misuse of language that would alarm George Orwell, who in his novel Nineteen-eighty-four warned of a "Newspeak" that equates opposites: "War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength." Eric Blair, writing with the pen name George Orwell, argued that the confusion of opposites is a precondition to negating thoughtful resistance to totalitarianism.

Calling out Ann Coulter and the GOP
by Sean Gangol
To say that I have been at odds with a conservative commentator known as Ann Coulter, would be the understatement of the decade. It's not to say that there haven't been times where I have found it amusing to see her tear into some of the whack jobs on the left. Unfortunately this same woman who takes great joy in exposing the utter lunacy of the left, seems to have a habit of dissolving into her own brand of lunacy. She refers to anyone who dares question the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as traitors and once referred to the widows of the 9-11 attacks as harpies because they didn't want wars fought in their husbands' names. Way to show that conservative compassion, Ann. Sometimes I think Alan Combs was right when he said that Coulter seems more like a liberal parody of a conservative.

The Space Review: Seven generations: a re-evaluation of the Paine Report
by Jeff Fullerton
This one tells all about the wasteful and lacking in vision the government space program has been. One good example given in this report was the obscene waste involved in the disposal of the external fuel tank of the space shuttle orbiter which was jettisoned to burn up on re-entry rather than taking the trouble to stockpile them in orbit. Considering the great cost involved on lifting every pound of mass into orbit- those things were a potential goldmine of building material for space stations, fuel depots and even interplanetary spaceships capable of taking people all over the solar system.

Oh No!!! Not ANOTHER Article on What Gun To Carry!!!
by Neale Osborn
This seems to be an ongoing topic in gun magazines, on-line gun forums and blogs, and half the conversations at the shooting range. This one MIGHT be a touch different, though. "Why?" I hear you ask. Read on, and see if I was correct!

EDITORIAL MATTERS

A new advertiser/affiliate this week: Coffee Club. Yum! I loves me my coffeeeeeeee.

I have to spend rather a lot of time in each issue of this here little magazine getting the advertisements in order. Yet, I get almost no income from the advertisements whatsoever. I'm beginning to wonder why I bother. How many of you even notice the ads, and how many less than that actually click on anything?

How many remember to click through TLE to get to Amazon.com?

That's what I though. I'm probably going to stop with the silly ads Real Soon Now, since I'm pretty much wasting my time. Although a few of you seem to occasionally buy something. Very occasionally. Yep.

Our Mr. Perez notes:

I've caught myself going on quite a bit about Freddie Gray's killing, especially after I found out he was being falsely charged with carrying a switchblade when he was in fact he was carried an assisted opening knife.

It could have been me. It could have been a slew of my friends, including several honest cops and security guards. It could have been any of you guys if you carry a knife. And allow me to reiterate that we are acting legally and we could still be killed by police and have our reputations smeared to prove we "had it coming."

So that's the reason I am getting so riled about the
whole thing. It's personal.

Yes indeed. As our Mr. Smith says:

A Cure for the Police Problem
by L. Neil Smith
America has a problem. People don't generally avoid speaking of it, but, to my knowledge, no one has offered any kind of solution to it. The failure to address it properly has changed the character of the nation. That problem is the police. They and their supporters will tell you a very different story, but they are almost self-evidently over funded, far too heavily armed, and there are vastly too many of them. Worst, they are almost never held to account for anything they do.
